Pizza Pie Fractions Activity
This is a fun fractions activity is great to help children visualize fractions and see what they really are! So simple, just take a paper plate- cut it up into the fraction pieces- write the appropriate fractions on each piece and help the child understand the concept by explaining that a fraction is taking a whole pizza, and diving it up- the number of total pieces is the lowest number, etc. Then scramble the pieces up and have the children put them together.
One of the reasons that I love this fractions activity is that it can easily be adjusted for all levels of learning. I used the standard, simple fractions 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 for my four year old since this was his first time being introduced to fractions. But for a student who has some background with fractions I would have included more difficult fractions. After visualizing, this activity can be used to compare fractions and also to discover equivalent fractions! Lots of possibilities!
An additional reason, we love this activity? I love hands on, kinesthetic learners- in these activities students use objects and move them around to gain a greater sense and mastery of the topic!
